Presidential Preps

Release Date: Wednesday, November 12th 2008

They’re here! President-elect Barack Obama’s transition team has arrived in Downtown, in a space provided by the US General Services Administration (GSA). Street closures and conversions as well as parking restrictions are already in place on 5th and 6th Streets NW. Expect the aberrations to continue at least until January 20, Inauguration Day, when the new president is sworn into office.

The measures are designed to provide security and safety around the presidential transition office, where top Obama advisors convene to hash out Cabinet selections, rethink President Bush’s executive orders and ponder other presidential responsibilities.

GSA is charged with handling presidential transition duties, as outlined by Congress in the Presidential Transition Act of 1963. Its Presidential Transition Support Team has worked for more than two years to secure and complete the headquarters for the incoming president’s transition team and help smooth the transfer of executive power. The 2008 Presidential Transition Headquarters has about 120,000 square feet of fully furnished and computer-equipped office suite space in Downtown. It’s nice to know our Downtown is part of this historic, presidential experience!
