This year’s National Candlelight Vigil, occurring during National Police Week, will be held at the National Law Enforcement Officer Memorial in the 400 block of E Street on Friday, May 13, at 8:00 pm.
The National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund (NLEOMF) sponsored ceremony recognizes federal, state and local law enforcement officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty for the safety and protection of others. Last year, more than 150 officers were killed. During this year’s vigil, more than 310 names newly engraved on the Memorial will be formally dedicated. Nearly 19,000 names, dating back to the first known death in 1792, are carved on the memorial’s walls.
The National Candlelight Vigil will be shown on a free, live videocast and will feature musical tributes, a laser light show and remarks by US Attorney General Eric Holder, a longtime friend and supporter of the NLEOMF.
The National Conference of Law Enforcement Emerald Societies organizes the march of bagpipers, which follows on Saturday, May 14. The procession travels from New Jersey Avenue & F Street to the Memorial at 6:00 pm.
National Police Week events will take place from Friday, May 13 to Monday, May 16, in DC. For more information, visit www.nleomf.org/programs/policeweek.
