Making a Difference

Release Date: Wednesday, December 28th 2011

The Martin Luther King Jr. Day federal holiday is widely recognized as a day of citizen action. In this spirit, Serve DC, the Mayor’s Office on Volunteerism, will partner with We Feed Our People (WFOP) from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm on Monday, January 16, to serve DC’s homeless residents in front of the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library (901 G Street). Expect G Street between 9th and 10th streets to be closed hours before and after the event.

On the national Martin Luther King (MLK) Day of Service, both Serve DC and WFOP will once again offer hot meals and provide warm clothes to DC’s homeless population. The event will include a kickoff program at 11:30 am and mark WFOP’s 25th anniversary hosting the annual outdoor soup kitchen and clothing distribution service, which assists hundreds of homeless individuals and families. The community-based coalition was formed to commemorate Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. by reaching out to the city’s most vulnerable population, the homeless.

G Street between 9th and 10th streets will be closed from 6:00 am to 5:00 pm because heavy pedestrian traffic will be expected in front of the library. The District Department of Public Works (DPW) will enforce the street closure beginning at 5:30 am. Drivers are advised to use caution in the area and find alternative parking before the street closes.

Serve DC also urges all to get involved on the MLK Day of Service and “make it a Day On, not a Day Off.”  For more information, and to find a service project near you, visit www.serve.dc.gov, or www.mlkday.gov.
