Living the Dream

Release Date: Tuesday, August 9th 2011

The long-awaited dedication of the national memorial to the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was postponed in August due to Hurricane Irene. The official dedication has been rescheduled to take place on Sunday, October 16. Meanwhile, the 30-foot replica of King is open to the public on the National Mall and drawing crowds.  It stands on four cherry tree-filled acres on the northwest shore of the Tidal Basin, across Independence Avenue from the Lincoln Memorial.  The granite sculpture cost $120 million, and took more than 14 years to complete.

The Washington, DC Martin Luther King, Jr. National Memorial Project Foundation, Inc. is behind the memorial, which is intended to be personally transformative for visitors, building a sense of commitment to the promise of positive change and active citizenship.
