On Sunday, February 5, the Chinese community of the greater Washington metropolitan area will celebrate Chinese Lunar New Year in Chinatown (H Street between 6th and 8th Streets NW) from 2:00 pm. to 5:00 pm.
The festival includes a parade, folk dances, musical band from various groups and local high schools. The popular lion and dragon dances, as well as a five-story high firecrackers that will be lit at 3:30 pm, will also be featured in the program.
The lunar year is 4704, year of the Dog. Chinese legend dictates that one born in the year of the dog is deigned to be honest and faithful to loved ones, albeit somewhat eccentric and very stubborn. They care little for wealth, yet somehow always seem to have money and make good leaders as well.
The Chinese Consolidated Benevolent Association, an umbrella organization representing 30 Chinese-American organizations throughout the Greater Washington Metropolitan area is hosting this event.
In further celebration of the Year of the Dog, the Chinatown Culture Center (616 H Street, Suite 201) is hosting a reception Chinese New Year on Friday, February 3 from 6:30 to 9:30 pm.
