Developers take note: Beginning January 1, new Green Building Act provisions will go into effect. Now new construction and major improvements to nonresidential, privately-owned buildings and projects with at least 50,000 square feet in DC must be proven to meet strict environmental standards. Specifically, the properties must fulfill or exceed current Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) standards at the certification level, within two years of receiving a certificate of occupancy. The provisions clear up ambiguity in the Green Building Act of 2006 about the types of building permits that must be submitted to ensure compliance. Click here for more information.
