Foot Race

Release Date: Thursday, March 11th 2010

More than 10,000 diehard runners will swarm about a half-mile stretch of Downtown on Saturday, March 20, as they compete to complete the grueling 13.1-mile SunTrust National Marathon.

The race, the nation’s fastest looped marathon course, will send sprinters through several DC neighborhoods—and cause a few Downtown street closures:

  • 6:55 am to 8:20 am – Constitution Avenue, from Pennsylvania Avenue to 15th Street
  • 8:00 am to 11:25 am – Constitution Avenue, from Pennsylvania Avenue to the 9th Street Tunnel
  • 6:55 am to 11:20 am – Pennsylvania Avenue, from 3rd Street to Constitution Avenue

The street closing and reopening times are estimates, and intermittent traffic flow across the course will be at the Metropolitan Police Department’s (MPD) discretion.

The National Marathon, which includes a Half Marathon and National Team Relay, is one of the more popular races on the international road-racing calendar. Now in its fifth year, this year’s race runs (no pun intended) from 7:00 am to about 1:30 pm, with a large chunk of the race’s second mile occurring in the Downtown BID area.
