Earth Day

Release Date: Friday, April 10th 2009

Hundreds of thousands of people are expected to converge on the National Mall to commemorate Earth Day on Sunday, April 19.

Earth Day is a special time to learn about our planet and how to take care of it. Although it actually falls on Wednesday, April 22, many people also observe Earth Week and Earth Month and participate in weekend festivals before and after the official date to support three core principles: a carbon-free future based on renewable energy, individual commitments to responsible, sustainable consumption and creating a new green economy that lifts people out of poverty by creating green jobs. Other events also will take place in the Downtown BID area, so stay tuned.

The Earth Day Network, an organization devoted to broadening and diversifying the worldwide environmental movement, organizes the day of action and civic participation and will officially kick off the Green Generation campaign, a two-year initiative to engage ordinary people and build solutions to urgent national and global issues such as climate change. Large-scale volunteer events will be held throughout the US, including in New York, San Francisco and Atlanta.
