Downtown March

Release Date: Friday, October 14th 2011

Motorists beware. The DC Full Democracy Freedom Rally and March begins at 9:30 am on Saturday, October 15, at Freedom Plaza (1400 block of Pennsylvania Avenue), followed by an 11:00 am march. What you should know …

Because of the massive pedestrian crowds expected for these events, the District Department of Transportation (DDOT) advises drivers to exercise caution when in the area and note the procession will proceed along the following route:

• West on Pennsylvania Avenue NW
• South on 15th Street, crossing over Constitution Avenue

Originally scheduled for Saturday, August 27, the DC Full Democracy Freedom Rally and March was cancelled because of concerns about Hurricane Irene. Both events were among the week of activities planned for the Martin Luther King Jr. National Memorial dedication, which also was cancelled but is now scheduled to take place on Sunday, October 16, on the National Mall

The rally and march were organized to call attention to DC’s quest for self-determination. Both DC and civil rights leaders will participate. The march will merge with Rev. Al Sharpton’s National Action Network March for Jobs and Justice at the Sylvan Theater (15th Street and Independence Avenue SW) on the Mall. Marchers will then proceed to the site of the King Memorial at Ohio Drive and West Basin Drive SW.
