Downtown Celebrates

Release Date: Wednesday, November 10th 2010

On November 9th the Downtown BID honored seven of Downtown's leaders, doers and most talked about projects at the much anticipated 2010 Momentum Awards ceremony. Business owners, developers, city officials—including DC Councilmembers Jack Evans (Ward 2) and Marion Barry (Ward 8)—partner organizations,  residents and friends of Downtown converged upon 700 Sixth Street, an Akridge LEED platinum-certified building, to salute visionaries who helped create the remarkable urban experience that is Downtown.

  Councilman Jack Evans

Amid a backdrop of the Downtown skyline, awards were presented to the following people, projects and programs: Douglas Development President Douglas Jemal (Downtown Citizen); the Washington Kastles (Downtown Experience);  New York Avenue Sculpture Project (Downtown Detail);

 Councilman Marion Barry
Superior Court’s DC Misdemeanor and Traffic Community Court (Downtown Partnership/Program); District Department of Transportation (Public Sector);  Co-Star Group, Inc. (Private Sector); and 901 K Street (Landmark Development Project).

As DC’s mayor in 1996, Barry signed into law the Business Improvement Districts Act, which was drafted by Councilmembers Evans and Charlene Drew Jarvis. A year later, the Downtown BID was launched as the first BID in the city, with an initial and immediate goal to make Downtown Washington clean, safe, and friendly.

Both Barry and Evans told nearly 200 BID guests assembled at the Momentum Awards ceremony that Downtown has come a long way in its incredible transformation from a bleak urban office park into the cultural and economic heart of DC and the region’s premier urban gathering place.
