The Big Read has undergone a big change. No longer funded by the National Endowment for the Arts (1100 Pennsylvania Avenue), the popular literary program is now sponsored by the DC Public Library. So get ready to delve into DC Reads 2011: One Book, One City, One Good Read. The fun begins on Saturday, October 15 and ends on Tuesday, November 15.
DC Reads promotes reading for pleasure and gives people an opportunity to read and discuss a single book that appeals to a broad audience. To celebrate the occasion, a series of activities centered around Wes Moore’s The Other Wes Moore, a story about two boys with similar names who were born blocks apart but whose lives took discrete paths, will unfold during the month-long event.
To join in the citywide reading campaign, grab a copy of the book from the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library (901 G Street), or another local branch. More information about major events, panel discussions, online book chats, and film screenings, is available at www.dclibrary.org.
