Church Celebration

Release Date: Thursday, February 4th 2010

Church of the Epiphany

The Church of the Epiphany’s (1317 G Street) parish house turns 100 this year. The first of several events to celebrate its centennial will begin on Sunday, February 14, at 11:00 am.

The theme of the special service, “An Anchor to Downtown,” will highlight the 166-year-old church’s ties to the neighborhood. Downtown property owner Chip Akridge, the founder and chairman of Akridge (601 13th Street), the full-service real estate firm, will be the guest speaker.

Epiphany, built in 1844, was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1971. Its parish house was constructed in the early 20th century (1910), at a time when many Downtown churches were moving their congregations to the suburbs. Over the years, Epiphany has opened new avenues for its ministry. Today, the Church offers daily worship, educational opportunities and a popular noontime concert series and provides outreach to the poor and homeless. Both the church and its garden provide a respite from the hustle and bustle of Downtown streets.
