Chinatown Revival

Release Date: Wednesday, July 8th 2009

A broad plan to reposition Chinatown as the region’s top destination for Chinese-Asian cultural businesses, programs, services, events and festivals is now available in English and Chinese for public review and comment through August 7, with a public hearing scheduled at 6:30 pm on August 5 at the Chinatown Community Cultural Center (616 H Street).

The DC Office of Planning and the Office on Asian and Pacific Islander Affairs have released the Chinatown Cultural Development Strategy Draft Plan, which provides an overview of the challenges and opportunities facing Chinatown, background on the planning process and community engagement and a historical look at Chinatown dating back to the 1850’s.

The plan also recommends five goals and priority actions: developing Chinatown as a cultural destination; creating a physical Chinatown experience; promoting Chinatown businesses; improving the quality of life in Chinatown; and working together to support leaders, organizations and partnerships for Chinatown.
