So, DC isn’t a state. We know that. But it sure is good to know we ranked No. 1 in square feet per capita of building space last year on the U.S. Green Building Council’s (USGBC) annual list of the Top 10 States for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED)-certified commercial and institutional green buildings. DC had 31.5 square feet of LEED-certified space per resident versus Colorado, which placed a distant second, with 2.74. New York placed 10th with 1.89 square feet of LEED-certified space per person. LEED is the internationally recognized mark of green building excellence, with more than 44,000 commercial project participating, comprising more than 8 billion square feet of construction space in all 50 states and 120 countries.
