The historic Willard InterContinental (1401 Pennsylvania Avenue) hotel, shuttered and nearly demolished in 1968, bounced back to its turn-of-the-century splendor after undergoing a dramatic facelift and reopening in 1986. Now the local gem is celebrating the 25th anniversary of its comeback. But it’s not just celebrating in any old fashion. 1986-themed specials will dominate—“Silver Jubilee Mint Julep” featuring 25-year Bourbon and the “Willard” cocktail will be served in its Round Robin and Scotch Bar throughout the month, and on September 20, the anniversary date, 25-year-old Scotch tastings will take place and three-course, $19.86 meals will be offered in its Café du Parc restaurant.
There’s more. Between 5:00 pm and 9:00 pm on September 20, diners will receive a commemorative menu, a guitarist will strum a steady stream of ‘80s hits, and complimentary appetizers will be served in the hotel lobby as a pianist plays melodious ‘80s tunes. Interested? The Willard will also debut its new, four-color history brochure and guests staying at the hotel on the anniversary date will receive several anniversary-themed amenities. After all, the hotel has hosted nearly every US president since 1853, and it’s where Julia Ward Howe wrote the “Battle Hymn of the Republic,” President Abraham Lincoln stayed prior to his inauguration, and the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King finished his renowned “I Have a Dream” speech. That’s certainly a lot to celebrate! For more information, click here.
