The Robert and Arlene Kogod Courtyard, at the center of the Donald W. Reynolds Center for American Art and Portraiture, features an elegant glass canopy designed by world–renowned architect Norman Foster, with interior design by internationally acclaimed landscape designer Kathryn Gustafson. The innovative 28,000–square–foot space can be viewed from the museums’ galleries and accommodates an array of activities, including art–making programs, children’s activities,concerts, performances, lectures and special events. The Courtyard also features free public wireless Internet access (Wi–Fi) and The Courtyard Cafè, which offers casual dining during public museum hours.

The National Historic Landmark building that surrounds the Robert and Arlene Kogod Courtyard is also home to the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery, the Lunder Conservation Center, the Luce Foundation Center for American Art and the Nan Tucker McEvoy Auditorium.
