The National Museum of American History houses exhibits related to the cultural, scientific and technical growth of the country. Collections include: agricultural implements, clothing and household furnishings, coins, cars, musical and scientific instruments, ships, trains, and ceramics. The museum holds such cultural gems as the original Star Spangled Banner, the John Bull locomotive, Archie Bunker's chair, Fonzie's jacket, and Dorothy's Ruby Red Slippers. Permanent exhibits include "On Time," approximately 200 timepieces from the last 300 years; "Communities in a Changing Nation: The Promise of 19th Century America" explores the excitement and dynamism of American life during the 19th century; "The Information Age" highlighting the development of the computer; "Field to Factory" interprets the difficulties and effects of the Great Migration; "After the Revolution" is about the first generation of people to live in a new nation; "First Ladies : Political Role and Public Image" examines the evolving role of the first lady. Admission is free. Museum shop offers crafts, arts, jewelry, foods, toys, and the Smithsonian's largest selection of books and videos.
