The National Japanese American Memorial to Patriotism During World War II was authorized to be constructed as a National Memorial by federal statute and signed into law on October 24, 1992. The Memorial was dedicated in 2000 and, in 2002, the National Japanese American Memorial Foundation (NJAMF) transfered ownership of the Memorial to the United States Government .

During the National Cherry Blossom Festival the annual Freedom Walk begins here. Donations received in support of the Freedom Walk help to fund NJAMF programs.
