Football Undercover
Germany, 2008
86 min.
A few years ago, Iranian director and football fanatic Ayat Najafi approached film student Marlene Assmann with a provocative plan: why not arrange for a friendly football match between Berlin’s Kreuzberg-based multicultural women’s squad and the Iranian national women’s team—which keeps a rigorous training schedule but never actually competes. A full year in the planning, the match is played in Tehran. Men are barred from the stadium, the players chafe under appropriate covering, and loudspeakers sternly warn female fans against excessive celebration. Fittingly, Football Undercover won best documentary and audience favorite prizes at the Berlin film festival.
